The name ‘Toothache plant’ comes from the numbing properties it produces in your mouth when the leaves and flowers are chewed. The plant has reddish-green foliage and tight, compact little pompom type flowers that have no petals and are yellow with a red centre, resembling eyeballs, so the herb plant is also commonly referred to as Eyeball Plant.
An easy to grow and low maintenance plant with a spreading and trailing habit, it can be grown in the ground or makes a wonderful container plant. The plants should be started indoors or in the greenhouse in the spring or early summer.
How To Grow Your Very Own Toothache Plant
Place the tablet of compressed compost into a cup and fill one-third with warm water. When the tablet is fully saturated it will swell up and it’s then ready to crumble up and put in the pot.
Place the seed in the pot. Do not cover the seeds as they need direct sunlight to germinate, so don’t bury them!
Position the pot on a saucer with a little water, and seal inside a clear plastic bag and keep in a warm place in direct sunlight, in a room that remains between 20-24°C (68-75°F). It will germinate between 7 – 14 days. Damp and cool conditions should be avoided, or the seeds may rot.
Remove the plastic bag from the pot when seedling emerges
Transfer your seedling to a bigger pot with potting compost when large enough to handle. If allowed to grow for too long in the small pot, the plant will rapidly droop and wither due to lack of water and nutrients.
Place the pot on a windowsill or another spot where there is plenty of light. Alternatively, plant outside in moist, but well-drained soil with added organic compost in full sun to partial shade.
Mature plants will reach 45 – 65 cm in height (18” to 25”). If kept in a container move it indoors when temperatures are cooler and put the plant out again the following spring, as it is not frost resistant.
Start sowing your Toothache Plant and have fun growing this herbal plant with its anti-bacterial and antifungal properties making it good for the immune system, digestion and nausea. The leaves are often eaten raw and taste good in salads.
