Now you can grow your very own Giant Sunflower. Follow the instructions carefully and in just three or four months it would grow to an amazing ten feet tall! The flowers can grow to up to one foot across with pretty yellow petals and a warm ochre and black centre. Each year you can collect the seeds and use them to grow again and again, or you can leave them out to feed the birds in the wintertime.
How To Grow Your Very Own Giant Sunflower
Place the tablet of compressed compost into a cup and fill one-third with warm water. When the tablet is fully saturated it will swell up and then it’s ready to crumble up and put into the pot.
Place the seeds into the compost to about half the compost depth and gently firm down.
Put the pot on a small saucer and keep in a warm place (minimum 15 degrees C / 60 F) cover over with a plastic bag. Keep away from strong sunlight and keep the compost moist at all times.
Once the seedlings start to appear, remove the bag and place the pot in a warm bright place. Remember to keep the compost moist and for best results feed weekly.
When the seedlings are about 50mm tall it’s time to re-pot them into a pot approximately 80mm diameter. If the seedlings are overcrowded, gently pull them apart and space them out in the new pot.
In the summer time plant them out in a sunny position where they are to flower. You will need to space them about 1 metre apart and water them weekly with a plant fertiliser. Stake them out firmly and see how tall they can grow.
Each autumn the Giant Sunflower will die and you can collect the seeds to grow again the next year.
