Strawberry Popcorn Plant
Strawberry popcorn is a great little plant that only grows four foot high, but has at least two ears on every stalk. Deep red kernels fill these little ears. Can you imagine red popcorn? How cool is that! Children will be fascinated as they watch these ruby-red kernels pop into fluffy white tasty treats, delicious to eat! They also make excellent autumn decorations.
Like other corn varieties, the red-kernel popcorn variety “Strawberry Popcorn” needs warm soil and mild air temperatures for germination. Start the popcorn plant indoors 4 to 6 weeks before planting in the garden in May.
How To Grow Your Very Own Strawberry Popcorn Plant
Place the tablet of compressed compost into a cup and fill one-third with warm water. When the tablet is fully saturated it will swell up and then it’s ready to crumble up and put into the pot until about half full.
Place the seed in the pot and fill the pot with the remaining compost.
Position the pot on a saucer and cover with a clear plastic bag and keep in a warm place, out of direct sunlight, in a room that remains between 18 – 24*C (65 – 75*F). It will germinate between 4 – 8 days.
Mist the surface of the soil daily with water. A spray bottle set to use a fine spray is ideal. Dot not saturate or your seed may rot.
Remove the plastic bag from the pot when the “Strawberry Popcorn” seedling emerges and fertilise every two days with diluted liquid houseplant fertilizer to half strength and mist the solution over the seedlings.
Transfer your seedling to a bigger pot when it is about 2 inches high. Place the pot on a sunny windowsill or another spot where they will get direct sunlight. Continue to mist the soil daily allowing the soil to dry between watering sessions.
Transplant the seedlings to the garden when they reach 4-6”. Transplanting later and the plants will not develop properly. Try not to disturb the roots when transplanting into a sunny spot with rich, well drained soil. Water the soil before planting.
The strawberry corn plant’s ears mature in mid to late summer. The process takes about three months from seed to harvest. The corn is ready for picking when the stalk and leaves turn brown and dry and the ears twist off the plant easily.
To make your popcorn, place the cobs in a microwavable bag and fold the end of the bag twice to seal it. Place the bag in the microwave (do not leave the bag unattended) and cook on high for several minutes until the corn pops are about 2 seconds apart, then remove from oven and ENJOY!
