Cotton Plant

The cotton plant is a nice summer green plant that will flower in late summer and then forms the cotton “square” which turns into a “boll” that looks like white cotton candy. Plants like lots of sunshine and sufficient moisture to wet the roots thoroughly and then allowed to dry. You will harvest your fluffy cotton in about 130-150 days from sowing.
The beautiful green plant will grow 0.9 m to 1.2 m (3 to 4 feet) tall.

How To Grow Your Very Own Cotton Plant

Step 1:

Place the tablet of compressed compost into a cup and fill one-third with warm water. When the tablet is fully saturated it will swell up and it’s then ready to crumble up and put into the pot until half full.

Step 2:

Plant the seed half the depth of the pot and fill the pot with the remaining compost.

Step 3:

Position the pot on a saucer and cover with a clear plastic bag and keep in a warm place out of direct sunlight, in a room that remains between 18°-24°C (65°-75°F). It will germinate between 4 – 15 days.

Step 4:

Mist the surface of the soil daily with water. A spray bottle set to use a fine spray is ideal. Do not saturate or your seed may rot.

Step 5:

Remove the plastic bag from the pot when the cotton seedling emerges.

Step 6:

Transfer your seedling to a bigger pot with potting compost when it is about 5 cm (2”) high. Place the pot on a windowsill or another spot where there is plenty of sunlight. Continue to mist the soil daily allowing the soil to dry between watering sessions.

Step 7:

Transplant the plant to a large pot when it reaches 10 – 15 cm (4”-6”) and water well. Keep the plant indoors or outside in a sunny position, away from wind in minimum temperatures of 18°C (65°F) and continue to water twice a week. Feed once a week with a liquid plant fertilizer that is high in potassium like rose or tomato fertilizer.

About two months after planting, flower buds called squares appear on the cotton plants. In another three weeks, the blossoms open. Their petals are various shades of pale yellow, pink, pink and yellow, pink and white changing colours before withering and falling after three days, leaving green pods which are called cotton bolls. As the boll ripens, it turns brown. The fibres continue to expand under the warm sun. Finally, they split the boll apart and the fluffy cotton bursts forth. Blossoming will continue 20 to 30 days. Should the plant be kept outdoors, remember to take it inside when temperatures are cooler (below 18°C (65°F). The plant can be taken out again the following spring. It will last several years if it does not get frost bitten.
