Weather was lovely on allotment today. There were a few hardy allotmenteers out today. Having given some considerable thought to my plan of my allotment, what has stayed the same is the decision to make 10 beds. There are 5 on each side with a central path down the middle and paths dividing each bed. I’ve marked each bed out using string and some bamboo canes. Definitely starting to take shape.
Had dug over the top bed which is one of two, possible three beds I’ve allocated for potatoes. I spent the morning adding some manure and breaking up the soil even more by hoeing. That’s now ready.
I bought three bags of potatoes this week. I’ve gone for “Winston” in first earlies, “Wilja” in seconds and “Maris Piper” in main crop. I grew Wilja last year with great success. It stored really well and made a fab mash!! Have started chitting them in egg boxes. I’m going to get a salad potato as well.
It was a lovely morning and I achieved quite a bit. Still not finalised my plan of what’s going where. Still keep changing it. Think I’m nearly there though!

SUNDAY 22nd JANUARY
First seed of the year in! Bought some root trainers in the week. Never used them before! They come with a little propagator top. I bought them as wanted to start off some sweet peas. Was quite impressed by them, they fit really neatly into the tray and then the lid on top. I have brought them into my conservatory as feel that might be a bit warmer. I love the smell of sweet peas. Have grown them most years but normally bought them in pots from the garden centre. Going to grow a my own this year.
Also started off some garlic individually in bio-degradable pots, so that I can plant straight them in the ground. Planted each clove individually with the tip just at the surface. I’ve left them in my unheated greenhouse. It’ll be interesting to see how they fair
Lastly I planted a tray of leeks, again I’ve never grown leeks from seed before. They’re in the conservatory too.
I made for lunch “Spinach Pancakes” with freshly harvested spinach from my raised beds at home. Was absolutely lovely! Went down a treat and was enjoyed by all.
Look forward to seeing how long the seeds take to come!
I’ve achieved quite a lot this weekend. Still plenty to do! Make the most of the weather and being outside!
